Work No.132

"Work No. 132" 63 20mm diameter holes, 52 paper scrolls (105mm X 296mm), 2 X 25W light bulbs.

The focus of a large part of my work has been gathering, collecting and collating conceptual thought based art ideas, dealing primarily with issues of authorship and creation. This work continued with this theme whilst also questioning my role as an artist within the contemporary art world.

Originally this work started as a collective of text based ideas for art work which was to be put together in a book format, with each idea given in an instruction format, but after spending a large amout of time creating and collecting ideas for art work, each with a number as a title, I started to question what I should be doing as an artist, and began to collect and formulate ideas and questions on what the artists role and what conceptual art are in contemporary art.

"Work No. 132" Instruction:

"In a corridor or room, drill 63 holes in the walls, each one mearuring 3.5" deep and 20mm wide. Make sure to drill the holes in no specific order or pattern so as not to mislead or confuse the viewer. In as many holes as you decide, place inside a scroll of paper measuring approximately 105mm X 296mm.

On each scroll, write a thought, idea, concept, suggestion or a question about life, art, work, the role of the artist, your role as an artist, and the view of the artist. Include small stories and poems inside as well.

Make copies of all of the text, and make them into books, books that manuals for my art and life, guides and containers for the thoughts held within the room for people to take away and remember the space by. Place copies of the scrolls outside in various cracks, gaps and holes to expand the circulation of the idea."
